Chapter 53: Long Night

They took Rain after about an hour of sitting in pain. Over the time she really was starting to get worse. She had a fever and she was starting to turn yellow. Flower also went in with her.

The doctor had to run a few tests. They had to eliminate all possibilities. She was put into a bed and an IV was put into her arm, but as soon as she saw the needle, she started flipping out. Rain never liked needles. She started to cry because she really didn’t want the IV.

“OK Rain, I need you to drink this,” a nurse said as she poured a yellowish liquid into 6 cups.

  “What is it?” Rain asked.

“Oh just think of it as some lemonade,” the nurse replied. “Now, drink up!”

Rain took one sip and spit it back into the cup, “This is NOT lemonade!”

“You’re right,” the nurse replied, “It’s a liquid we use to make your insides glow for the CAT Scan.”

The doctor came in, “We also need you to take a pregnancy test.”

Flower started laughing. Rain couldn’t believe it either, but she followed orders. After that they wheeled her by bed to the CAT Scan. “Uh oh! I think I have to go to the bathroom again.” Rain said.

“Oh, no, that’s just the fluids taking affect,” the doctor said. “Oh and we need to take some blood too. We think that you might have punctured your liver.”

“I can’t watch this,” Flower said. She hated blood. “I’m gonna go update Modnar, Josh, and Olive. I’ll be right back.”

“MOMMY!” Rain screamed as Flower walked out of the room.

The doctor came over and sat next to Rain, “OK Rain, I need you to do something for me. When your mom comes back in, I need you to say good-bye to her. If it is a punctured liver then there are 3 possibilities: (1) You could die in this test, (2) You’ll have to have emergency surgery if you do survive and it is a punctured liver (3) You also could die in surgery. None of us want you to die, but just in case, you should say good bye.”

Then the nurse took the blood. Rain cried through the whole process. About 5 minutes later, Flower came through the door, “They’re on their way back.”

“Mommy, I have to say something,” Rain started. “See while you were gone the doctor told me that if it actually was a punctured liver that there was a 2 in 3 chance that I could die during this test or surgery.” Tears began to form in both of their eyes. “Mommy, I love you. You’ve been the best mom in the world.”

“Rain, you’re my only daughter. I love you more than anything. Hold on as long as you can. Don’t make me tell Olive. She’ll be crushed.” Flower answered. They both started to cry.

“Are you ready?” the doctor asked.

Rain nodded her head. She wondered how bad a cat scan could really be. I mean she loved cats. “I love you mom!”

“I love you too,” Flower replied.

As Rain was put through the machine she got scared. This had nothing to do with cats, but she was so scared that she was careful to not move.

***

The 3 finally pulled into the emergency parking lot. Olive ran to through the doors with Derek at her side. Modnar also followed. They sat down in the waiting room. Modnar grabbed her Bible and Olive grabbed one from the magazine table. Olive opened hers to Deuteronomy 31:6. She had heard Modnar reading it the other night and so she thought it could bring her some comfort.

Derek got up and started to roam. He thought that he might be able to catch a glimpse of Rain. He also got Olive a drink, cause she looked like she needed one. He brought it back. There was still silence. “Here Olive, I figured you could use this.”

“Derek, how did you know that Snapple was my favorite?” Olive asked.

“Well I figured seems how Rain loves it, that you would too,” Derek explained.

“Speaking of Rain, did you catch any glimpses?” Modnar asked.

  “Nothing.”

“Well, we’ve been sitting here for a while, so I think I should let Flower know that we are here.” Modnar said. She picked up the walkie-talkie, “Flower? It’s Modnar.”

  “Yes?” Flower responded.

“We’re in the waiting room.” Modnar said.

“Oh, ok, I’ll be out soon.” Flower answered.

Then Olive saw something that she thought she would never see. A tear rolled off of Modnar’s cheek. She was crying.

About 5 minutes later, Flower came out. “Hi, umm . . .it’s not punctured, but some cartilage was scraping it. We just made it. Yeah, she can’t do anything physical for at least 7-10 days. So, you’ll all have to do her chores, but I’m sure you won’t mind. She’s almost ready now, so we’ll be back out in a few minutes.”

“Thank God, she’s ok!” Olive said. A huge relief came over all of them. Flower went back inside to get Rain.

Olive started crying again. “What’s wrong?” Derek asked.

“Nothing, I’m just relieved, that’s all.” Olive responded.

“I know, we all are,” he replied.

Soon enough Rain came into the waiting room with Flower. She was still in pain and she had to limp, but she was glad to be getting out of there. “Guess what?”

“It’s not punctured! We know!” Olive said.

“No, well yeah, but something else.” Rain replied.

  “What?” Modnar asked.

“I guess Roy didn’t get to me after all.” Rain replied.

“What do you mean?” Olive asked confused.

  “I’m not pregnant!”

“They made you take a pregnancy test?” Derek asked.

“Well I suppose they had to, to eliminate all of the possibilities.” Modnar replied.

“OK, well I’m tired. Let’s go find a hotel and we’ll sleep there.” Flower insisted.

“Well, I think that we’ll still head home, but we’ll make sure you get to the hospital ok. I want my own bed if you know what I mean.” Modnar replied.

They piled into their separate cars and Modnar took them to a hotel. While Flower checked them in, Olive went over to say good night. Josh did too.

“Well Rain, I’ll call you tomorrow morning, ok? I love you sis. I’ll pray for you.” Olive said as she gave Rain a hug through the window.

“Good night Olive. I love you too!” Rain replied.

Derek also gave Rain a hug. “Good night. Thanks for getting me out of there.”

  “Good night Josh.” Rain replied.

“Actually Rain, it’s Derek now,” Olive stated, “But it’s a long story.”

Flower came back out. She and Rain went to get food, while Modnar, Derek, and Olive got back in the bus and drove home. A long night was finished, well they thought so anyways.

Chapter 54: The Surprise Guest

Olive and Derek had both fallen asleep, and when they got home it was just about 1 in the morning. Olive opened her eyes, “It’s that a man standing there?”

“Oh . . .uh . . .yeah it is,” Modnar replied.

Olive rubbed her eyes to get a better look. “Oh my gosh . . .It’s Michael!”

“Who’s Michael?” Josh asked with a tone of jealousy and suspicion.

  “It’s Flower’s boyfriend.” Modnar responded.

Olive got out quickly. “Don’t forget your crutches!” Derek reminded.

Olive crutched quickly to the door where the 6’ 5” man was standing. “Hi, I’m Olive! I’m the youngest of the 3 sisters!”

“Hi, umm . . .where’s Flower?” Michael asked.

“Oh, she’s in Burlington. Rain was in the emergency room most of the night and they are staying at a hotel.” Modnar explained. “Why are you here?”

“First of all, who is Rain?” he asked.

“Oh that’s Danielle. My real name is Olivia. This is Hannah a.k.a. Modnar and this is Josh a.k.a. Derek. We like our nicknames better.” Olive explained.

“Oh I see.” he answered, “So after Flower left this morning I realized that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. I tried to catch her flight, but I just missed it. So, I did the next best thing. I jumped on the next flight and came here. Then she wasn’t home anyways.”

“So, you were planning on asking her to marry you?” Derek asked.

“Basically. Hey can we go inside? I’m kinda cold. I’ve been out here for at least 7 hours!” Michael said.

“Sure,” Modnar answered. “Oh, Derek can you bring some wood in? The fire needs to be started.” Modnar went in and made some hot chocolate for the shivering man.

“Hey Modnar, I’m going to bed. My foot really hurts.” Olive said.

“Ok, good night Olive.” Modnar replied.

“Good night Derek.” Olive said as she winked at him.

“Wait!” Derek stopped her. “Let me help you. You shouldn’t walk up those steps. I’ll carry you!”

  “Are you sure?” Olive asked.

“Positive, it would be my pleasure.” he responded. He then proceeded to carry Olive up the stairs. So, ROMANTIC!!!

Michael sat down at the table. “So, when do you think she’ll be home tomorrow?”

“Well, it will probably be late afternoon, but we can get Rain to stall her, cause I have a plan . . . A romantic plan.” The two then discussed it.

Upstairs, Derek had let Olive down on her bed. He sat there beside her and they talked. He also wanted to make sure that she was ok. Right before Olive fell asleep, she asked him a question, “Derek do you like me?”

“Olive, I can honestly say that I do.” he responded. They held hands as Olive drifted off into her dreams. Derek stayed by her side so he could get something for her if she needed it. Soon, he too fell asleep but on the hard floor.

Modnar and Michael agreed on the plan. Michael slept in Flower’s room. When Modnar went upstairs she notice Derek. She took a blanket from Rain’s bed and covered him. In doing so, she noticed that they were holding hands, and for the first time, she was ok with it. The lights went out and everyone was asleep.

Chapter 55: Lovely Surprises

Derek sat beside Olive’s bed, “Olive, it’s 11:30. You need to get up. I brought you breakfast.”

She opened her eyes to see Derek sitting on the floor next to her. “Good morning.” she said as she gazed into his eyes. “Wait, what are they and who made them?” she asked referring to the breakfast he had brought up for her.

“Oh, Modnar made blueberry muffins . . .from scratch,” Derek replied.

“From scratch?” Olive asked nervously.

“Yeah, isn’t that a good thing?”

“Not usually,” Olive replied. “I’ll skip it.” Then Modnar came upstairs. “So what were you and Michael talking about last night?” Olive asked.

“Oh we were making a plan. It’s a great plan, but we need to stall Flower until after dark,” Modnar answered. “Hey don’t you have to call Rain?” She asked Olive.

“Oh yeah, Derek hand me that walkie-talkie please.” He did and then he went downstairs with Modnar. Olive pressed the button, “Rain, hey Rain!!! It’s Olive!”

“Hey Olive, what’s up?” Rain asked.

“Is Mom around?” Olive asked.

“No, she just got in the shower. Why?” Rain responded.

“Well cause you need to do something,” Olive answered. “See, when we got home, Michael was standing outside the door. He had gotten on a plane and flew here to propose!”

“What? No way!!!” Rain replied in a hushed whisper. “What do you want me to do?”

“Well, you need to stall her until well, sometime after dark. Let’s say about 8. We’ll probably be ready before that, but in order to get the full romantic affect it needs to be after dark. I don’t know what you can tell her . . .Umm; say that you have to go furniture shopping. When she asks why, say that Derek needs some. Roy actually took all of his furniture with him, and Derek ended up sleeping on the floor next to my bed last night. It was so romantic, but it must have hurt. But we both fell asleep holding hands. It was so romantic . . .Anyways, can you do it?” Olive asked.

“Umm . . .yeah . . .I mean it probably won’t take that long to shop, but we can go to a few more places. Not to mention we’ll have about a 3 hour drive home with all of the traffic and stuff.” Rain answered. “Now, why is his new name Derek?”

“Well Rain, I thought that he should have a new nickname too,” Olive explained, “This might sound weird, but I think the name Derek is well . . .HOT!”

“I shouldn’t have asked.” Rain replied.

“No, Rain, last night I asked him if he liked me, and he said yes. That’s when I fell asleep. It was so romantic.” Olive said.

“Hey I gotta go. Mom’s ready to go!” Rain said.

“All right, have fun,” Olive said. “Good luck!”

Rain got off just as Flower was coming out of the bathroom, “Mom, Olive called. She said that things are going well, but there’s a slight problem. We need to go furniture shopping.”

“Why?” she asked.

“ Well, I guess that Roy took all of his furniture and that left Josh, I mean Derek, to sleep on the floor. I guess it was a little uncomfortable.” Rain replied.

“OK, as long as you are feeling up to it,” Flower answered.

“Yeah, and maybe after that we can do something else.” Rain added.

“OK, I guess. Just let me pack and we can leave. What time is it?” Flower asked.

“It’s about 12:30,” Rain answered.

“Wow, we aren’t gonna get back until after dark. Oh well, I guess it has to be done.” Flower added. They both got ready to go and then they left.

***

Back at home; everyone was getting ready for the night. They, well Derek, Olive, and Modnar, couldn’t believe that Flower was going to be proposed to in 8 hours. Olive and Derek were in charge of the scenery. They set to work on the trail that Flower would walk down later that night. Well, lets just say that they did more than just work on the trail. They were alone, and they took advantage of it.

While they were walking down the trail, Derek made his first move toward Olive. He took Olive’s hand in his and they continued to walk towards the end of the path. At first Olive had hesitated to take his hand, but then she just got used to it.

At the end of the path, there was a small log just big enough for the two of them to sit on, so they sat down. “Olive can I ask you something?” Derek asked as he looked into her eyes.

“Umm . . .yeah . . .of course. What’s on your mind?” Olive replied.

“Well Olive, I know that we’ve only known each other for a day, but I was wondering . . .Do you think that we might be able to hang out . . .Like on a date?” Derek asked.

Olive was completely speechless. She thought about it for a minute. “Well, I would love to, but I have to think about it for a little bit. I mean, I didn’t expect this so soon. Is that ok, with you?” Olive asked. The only reason why she didn’t say yes, was so that she didn’t end up getting disowned by Rain.

“Oh yeah . . .sure,” Derek replied disappointedly. “I don’t want to rush you.”

“Yeah, besides . . .I think we should finish this path right now. I’ll think about it, I promise.” Olive assured him.

“I know you will,” Derek replied.

Then the two got back to work on the path. It was pretty long too. So it took them a while. They started at different ends, so they could meet in the middle. It was hard for both of them to concentrate. Olive was thinking about the decision and Rain’s reaction when she told her. Derek, well he couldn’t stop wondering. He was so anxious to know her decision, but he didn’t want to get his hopes up.

Eventually they did meet up, but Olive still didn’t have an answer for Derek. They went back to the house, but it was a very silent walk back to the house.

When they reached the house, they went inside to see what Modnar had been doing. Michael had been practicing his proposal speech to Modnar, so that he would be somewhat prepared. It was just about 4 o’clock, and they still had 4 hours to go. Olive decided to go back upstairs. Derek didn’t offer his help this time. It was almost like they were fighting.

Olive picked up the walkie-talkie, “Rain, are you there? I gotta talk to you.”

“Olive, what’s up? Is something wrong?” Rain asked.

“Well Rain . . .wait where are you?” Olive asked.

“I’m eating. We finished shopping for furniture so we decided to stop at the Food Co-op to get some food. Mom is shopping for other stuff though.” Rain replied.

“Ok, well . . .so Derek and I were put in charge of making the pathway look really good, and it really does, but well . . .something else happened. We walked down there and we were alone . . .” Olive started.

“Olive what did you do? If you did anything stupid . . .” Rain interrupted.

“NO, it wasn’t stupid or dangerous, but he made his first move. He took my hand and we walked/crutched to the end of the path. Then and there he did something else. No, he didn’t kiss me, but he did ask me out on a date.” Olive explained.

“And what did you say?” Rain asked.

“Well, I haven’t given him an answer yet,” Olive responded. “Rain, I really want to say yes, but I promised you that I wouldn’t make you uncomfortable. What do you think?”

“Well Olive, I personally didn’t think this was going to happen this quickly either. I have to think about it. When you do have to tell him?” she asked.

“I never gave him a time, but until I give him an answer it’s going to be awkwardly silent around him and the house.” Olive answered.

“OK, well I’ll think about it, and I’ll give you the response when we get home, ok?” Rain said.

“OK Rain. I love you sis.” Olive replied.

“Oh I gotta go! Mom is coming to check up on me. See you in 4 hours,” Rain said. Then the room went silent again.

***

Around 8:15 that night, Flower and Rain pulled into the driveway. They no longer had the little red sports car, but a blue Land Cruiser. They got out and went into the house.

Michael snuck out the back and went through the trail to his spot. Rain and Flower came through the doorway. Modnar ran up to Flower, “You have to come with us. We have a surprise for you!”

“Yeah, we’ve been working on it all day.” Derek urged.

“Ok, well let’s go then.” Flower replied. Then Modnar and Derek lead Flower down the candle lit path. There was also a little trail of rose petals on the ground.

On the way down, Rain and Olive had a talk about Derek. “Well Olive, I’ve been thinking about what to say to you all day. I basically think that you are old enough to make the decision yourself. I trust you, but promise me that you’ll keep it slow and that you’ll back down if he starts moving too fast.” Rain said.

“I promise Rain.” Olive said. Then she crutched over to where Derek was standing.

Flower looked down at the end of the trail where she saw her beloved, Michael, sitting on a small log. He looked up and gazed into her eyes. She walked breathlessly to him and sat next to him. “What are you doing here?”

Just then Michael got up and then knelt down on one knee. “Flower, when you left I realized that something. I realized that I wanted to be with you for the rest of my life.” Tears started to form in Flower’s eyes. “I had to be with you, because I love you. So I came here to ask you something.” Michael took a deep breath. “Will you marry me?”

With tears streaming down her face, she answered, “Yes Michael, I’ll marry you.”

While they celebrated, Olive took Derek’s hand. Their eyes met and Olive said, “Yes, I’ll go out with you.”

“What?” Derek asked. “I thought for sure that it was a ‘no’.”

“Derek, I’ve wanted to go out with you for a while now. I’m sure.” Olive responded. “Ever since I first heard about you, I wanted to go out with you, and now it is finally happening.”

By the end of the night Michael had surprised Flower, and Olive had surprised Derek. Everyone was happy as love moved throughout the evening air. It was a truly romantic evening.
